Beat of a Different Drum

Ahuli (Cherokee for drum)

When you hear a drum playing, most people think of it as simply providing a good beat for the rest of the musical instruments that are usually playing in tandem with the rhythm-keeper. This is not true for Native Americans, where the drum beat means so much more; spiritually, keeping grounded to their roots, culture, history and of course, a great rhythm for songs. This has always fascinated me so I will delve deeper into the meaning of the drum and it’s place in the Cherokee culture.
